Uncertainties of GRACE‐Based Terrestrial Water Storage Anomalies for Arbitrary Averaging Regions

چکیده

The application of terrestrial water storage (TWS) data observed with GRACE and GRACE-FO often requires realistic uncertainties. For gridded TWS data, this the knowledge covariances, which can be derived from formal, i.e., formally estimated in parameter estimation, variance-covariance matrix provided together Stokes coefficients. However, propagation monthly matrices to is computationally expensive, so we apply a spatial covariance model for data. provides non-homogeneous (location depending), non-stationary (time anisotropic (orientation depending) covariances between any two given points. Averaging Results with Theory Uncertainties *

Combining measurements which have " theoretical uncertainties " is a delicate matter, due to an unclear statistical basis. We present an algorithm based on the notion that a theoretical uncertainty represents an estimate of bias.

Basin-scale water-balance estimates of terrestrial water storage variations from ECMWF operational forecast analysis

[1] In recent publications, a new basin-scale dataset of monthly variations in terrestrial water storage (BSWB) was derived for the ERA40 time period (1958–2002) using an atmospheric-terrestrial water-balance approach (Seneviratne et al., 2004; Hirschi et al., 2006). Here, we test the feasibility of using ECMWF operational forecast analyses – available for the recent time period in near real ti...
